Endangered Species
There a number of classifications we need to be aaware of when reporting sightings.
- Conservation Status
- Protected
- Sensitive
Wildlife Hero keeps up to date lists on all these classifications. The lists are updated by SANBI. As well as being informative for the user they also help the biodiversity manager decide if details of the sighting should be released, or when they should be released.
Note the colour coding we use this throughout the application to show the species conservation status,
Critically endangered species: any indigenous species facing an extremely high risk of extinction in the wild in the immediate future.
Endangered species: any indigenous species facing a high risk of extinction in the wild in the near future, although it is not a critically endangered species.
Vulnerable species: any indigenous species facing an extremely high risk of extinction in the wild in the medium-term future; although it is not a critically endangered species or an endangered species.
